# Context

> What your agent knows about your brand before it writes: your brand guide and the references behind it.

Context is what your agent knows about you before it writes. Your **brand guide** says
what you believe, who you write for, what you offer, how you're different, and how you
sound. **References** are the material those pages draw on. Something belongs in Context
only if it would change a draft.

Open **Context** from the left rail, then switch between **Brand guide** and
**References**.

## Your brand guide

The **Overview** brings together five pages: **Beliefs** first, then **Audience**,
**Offering**, **Positioning**, and **Voice**. Beliefs is what your brand believes about the
world, what it thinks is worth doing, what it won't compromise on, and what it rejects
that others in your space accept. The other four pages express it. Tone, preferred terms,
and what never to say belong on **Voice**.

Beliefs has to come from you, not your website. During setup, Stanza asks you its four
questions and writes the page from your answers alone. Until someone saves Beliefs, the
Overview marks it as unanswered.

A page that hasn't been written yet shows its question and what would help answer it. On
the Overview, choose **Write it** to answer in your own words, or **Add reference** to add
material first.

Under each page title you can see who last saved it and when. A page nobody has changed
since setup says **Written by Stanza**.

### Edit a brand page

Brand pages open for reading. To change one:

1. Choose **Edit**. Because agents read this page whenever they write for you, Stanza asks
you to confirm. Choose **Edit page**.
2. Make your changes. They save as you type, and the earlier wording isn't kept.
3. Choose **Done** when you're finished.

Your edit is what Stanza and your connected agents read next. There's nothing to approve
and no update to wait for. Agents never edit brand pages; they can only
[leave comments](#ask-your-agent-what-a-reference-changes).

## Add references

Choose **Add reference** and pick what you're adding:

- **Files:** drop files or a folder, or browse for them. Stanza supports text (`.txt`),
Markdown (`.md`), CSV (`.csv`), and Word (`.docx`). Export a Google Doc as Word or a
Google Sheet as CSV first. PDFs and images aren't supported.
- **Pasted text:** give it a title and paste the text.
- **Web page:** enter the page's address. Stanza reads the page once and keeps a copy, so
the reference reads the same if the page later changes or disappears.

Each reference can carry an optional **note**: why it matters, or how to use it.

An upload shows **Converting…** while Stanza prepares it. If the import couldn't finish,
open it to retry. Check that tables and complex layouts came through as expected.

## Your references

**References** lists each reference with who added it, when, and the note they attached.
Web pages show their address. Open a reference to read it, or download the original of an
uploaded file.

References are kept as they were added. To change one, choose **Remove** and add the new
version. Removing a reference stops Stanza and your agents from reading it; brand pages
keep what they already say.

## Ask your agent what a reference changes

Adding a reference stores it, and nothing else. Stanza doesn't rewrite your brand pages
from it. When a reference should change what a page says, ask your agent. After you add
one, Stanza shows **Ask your agent what this changes** (or names your agent, such as
**Ask Claude what this changes**). If no agent is connected yet, the line links to
[Connect your agent](/integrations/mcp).

For example, after a news article about your company:

1. **Add the reference.** Choose **Add reference**, then **Web page**, and enter the
article's address. Add a note such as "Our funding coverage."
2. **Ask your agent.** In Claude or ChatGPT, ask: "I added the TechCrunch piece to our
references in Stanza. Read it, compare it with our positioning page, and comment on
   anything it changes."
3. **Read the comment.** Open **Positioning**. The passage is highlighted, and the comment
shows your name with a small Claude or ChatGPT mark, so you can tell your agent left it.
4. **Make the change.** If you agree, choose **Edit** and change the page yourself, then
   resolve the comment.

Keep references focused and clearly titled so you and your agent can find the right one.
A reference isn't a confirmed brand fact; put the guidance you want writers to follow on
the brand pages.
